In 1977 he retired from wrestling and turned to his community. He ran for council on Kahnawake and served 10 consecutive terms.. Kahnawake was in lockdown and meetings with government officials had to be held off the reserve. Billy used his boat to cross the river. He told me about a time when the police were following him. He knew the river, and he turned to avoid some hidden rocks; the police didn’t, and their boat made a direct hit. As he grew older, he took on the mantle of an elder. He was well versed in the history of the Mohawk people. Once when I was researching the history of the famous Mohawk iron workers, he told me the story of the tragedy of the Quebec Bridge.
