An issue leading to loads of head scratches around Kyle Field: Why weren’t more Aggies...
Texas A&M defensive lineman DeMarvin Leal was widely projected a year ago to be a 2022 first-round pick, but the former Judson standout slid all the way to the third round.COLLEGE STATION — Besting Texas no longer is a big deal at Texas A&M — it’s become too low of a bar for the Aggies with the Longhorns’ longtime dip into competitive inconsequence.
Only Green made the first round, 15th overall to the Texans, while Pittsburgh chose Leal in the third round. The Chargers grabbed the workhorse Spiller in the fourth round, and the Jets snagged defensive end Micheal Clemons in the fourth round as well. And … that was it. Wydermyer wasn’t even drafted.
The win total included a toppling of then-top-ranked Alabama at Kyle Field, easily the high mark of the Fisher era to date in College Station. A year ago during a visit to the Houston Touchdown Club, Fisher pledged he would beat mentor Nick Saban before Saban retired from Alabama. Perhaps the most telling aspect of a program needing to get its act together was seen in the NFL combine and A&M pro day numbers, featuring one letdown after another.
