Downer EDI is looking for more than 3000 workers and is paying some staff overtime to complete contracts, chief executive Grant Fenn said as the services group delivered a 17 per cent drop in annual net profit to $152 million.

Downer’s business relationships in China, which include train manufacturing and steel fabrication partnerships, had not been hurt by thewith Australia, but the company does not want to see any further deterioration, Mr Fenn said. Analysts at Macquarie Research said it was positive that Downer was prepared to give quantitative guidance and the forecast growth was “very respectable amid a challenged and volatile economic backdrop”.
