Dozens of medical staff at The Alfred have been cleared to return to work following a cluster of coronavirus cases in the oncology ward, but it could be months before the source of the deadly outbreak at the hospital is known.

About 100 staff from the hospital's oncology ward were sent home and ordered to go into isolation following the outbreak, buthas been told a large proportion of them have since been tested and cleared to return to their normal work duties.A spokeswoman for The Alfred said on Tuesday it could take weeks or even months before the source of the infection was determined.A woman in her 60s died in the hospital on Wednesday night.

"There are many cases under investigation across the state," he said. "Breakdowns of cases by local government area are available."
