The NSW State Emergency Services has carried out almost 50 flood rescues overnight as parts of the Illawarra and Sydney were drenched with more than 200 millimetres of rain.
Emergency services have carried out more than 49 flood rescues overnight as Sydney and the Illawarra have been hit with torrential rain.The Weather Bureau says areas south of Sydney will receive some relief as the rainfall eases.
Most of the 43 flood rescues in the Southern Zone were in the Wollongong area, where Cringila received 213 millimetres of rain overnight and neighbouring Port Kembla had 202 millimetres. Around 330 millimetres of rain has fallen in the last two days at Currarong and Vincentia, sparking flash flooding in many areas, while the NSW SES has carried out over 60 flood rescues.Cr Findley says flood emergencies used to occur around once a year but are now so frequent the council simply can't cope.
"We used to average a natural disaster one a year — that was pretty easy to handle back in the day but that has now racked up to three to four per year.
