Authorities in California are investigating an alleged case of animal abuse after discovering dozens of dead and malnourished horses on a property. Volunteers have rescued numerous animals, while others had to be euthanized. The suspect, Jan Johnson, faces multiple charges, including cruelty to animals.

Volunteers dedicated two days to rescuing dozens of horses and other animals from a property in California at the center of an animal abuse investigation. The grim discovery of numerous dead or malnourished horses prompted the operation. According to the San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office, 90 horses, five donkeys, and three alpacas were successfully rescued. Tragically, 53 horses, one cow, and one dog were found deceased. Thirteen horses, one donkey, and one bull had to be euthanized.

Authorities emphasize that these figures are subject to change as the investigation remains active. The San Joaquin County Sheriff's Office first contacted the suspect, Jan Johnson, in August 2024 following reports of animal neglect. During this initial contact, Johnson allegedly threatened deputies. Subsequently, on January 4, officers responded to a report of a rooster fight at one of Johnson's three properties near Clements. At this property, they discovered 30 dead roosters and 65 alive. While Johnson was not present at the time of the rooster fight, her ownership of the property allowed authorities to obtain warrants to search her primary residence and other properties. The search of Johnson's main residence and other properties led to the discovery of the horses and other animals, with an initial report of 27 deceased horses. Johnson was subsequently arrested. Volunteers have been tirelessly working to rescue the animals from Johnson's property and are now committed to their care and recovery. Chantel Tieman, with animal charity Hold Your Horses Livestock Evacuation and Rescue, expressed the profound heartbreak of the situation, stating that these animals should have never suffered. She emphasized that community support is crucial in nursing the surviving animals back to health
