US infectious disease chief Dr Anthony Fauci has found himself a pawn in the fray of hyper-partisanship dividing the United States.
Sky News contributor Cameron Stewart argued the fact Dr Fauci and President Donald Trump appeared to be at odds on national virus management meant the Democratic Party was "very defensive" of Mr Fauci. "Who knows what games are being played," he said. "The Democrats on the left side of politics are very much defensive of Fauci.
"They see Trump is unhappy with Fauci because Fauci is pretty much saying the virus is out of control in the country and a lot more needs to be done." Restrictions could be reimposed by state governors as cases soar with Dr Fauci calling for a "reset" of the country's pandemic strategy. State virus management - intermingled with party tensions and political point-scoring - has posed a significant threat for the President as the November election date draws closer.
