The Australian’s Health Editor Natasha Robinson has criticised Queensland Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young for her “inflammatory” remarks which told residents to ignore advice about under 40s receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.

The prime minister has been slammed by state health officials for mixed messaging after saying those under 40 wishing to receive the Oxford jab could do so in consultation with their GP.

“I think they were quite extraordinary comments when you look at the actual risk that we’re dealing with here,” Ms Robinson told Sky News. “The actual risk of getting one of these rare blood clots if you’re aged between 30 and 39 is 1.6 cases in 100,000 … it really, really is tiny so those comments were really inflammatory.”

In contrast, Ms Robinson says the response by the NSW government’s response has been “much more measured and sensible”. “I think NSW is taking the sensible position here saying even though we’re not going to make it available for you in our mass hubs, and we think you should follow the ATAGI advice … if somebody sees the benefit for them in that scenario outweighs the risk, they want to make that informed choice then they can,” she said.
