A former NBN Co executive has argued that NBN Co's upgrade plans are designed to fight against 5G
Former NBN Co chief technology officer Gary McLaren has said a multi-million dollar upgrade to the national broadband network is a dramatic change to the Morrison government's plans, driven by the commercial threat caused by 5G wireless services.provide around 6 million households with the option of accessing ultra fast internet speeds
But Mr McLaren said "it was only two years ago that [then-communications minister] Mitch Fifield said, based on some research, that 98 per cent of Australians would be happy with 50 megabits per second until 2026"."They changed pretty dramatically in the last two years ... the question is what has changed.
Former prime minister Kevin Rudd, who announced the original NBN, said the government's strategy had delivered "seven years of lost opportunity for Australia". NBN Co chief executive Stephen Rue said there would be enough people willing to pay for higher internet speeds. Statements from Telstra and TPG Telecom welcomed the announcement but argued NBN Co would need to review the pricing model it has in place so the costs for customers were not too high."There'll be a lot of demand. We all know that NBN sets the price and there is little margin anyone can make on top of it. You are looking at well over $120-$150 per month.
