British tennis star Jack Draper battled back from a two-set deficit to defeat Aleksandar Vukic in a thrilling five-set match at the Australian Open. Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic expressed his frustration with disruptive fans during his straight-sets victory, and Naomi Osaka was forced to retire after losing the first set.
British 15th seed Jack Draper survived a dramatic scare against Australian Aleksandar Vukic , ultimately emerging victorious in a five-set thriller that culminated in a tense 10-point tiebreak. Vukic threatened to pull off the biggest win of his career, taking a 2-1 lead after the first three sets. However, after smashing his racquet in frustration, Draper rallied back to secure the victory in five sets.
Trailing 7-8, Vukic made a crucial error, sending a drop shot into the net, handing Draper two match points. Vukic saved the first with a powerful serve but couldn't withstand the second, failing to return a thunderous Draper serve. Meanwhile, fan behaviour dominated day six of the Australian Open, with Novak Djokovic expressing his displeasure at interruptions during his straight-sets victory over Croatian 26th seed Tomas Machac. Both players were visibly frustrated as the crowd at Rod Laver Arena repeatedly interrupted play. After one rally, where a fan yelled as Machac prepared to hit a winning shot, both players extended their arms in disappointment. Chair umpire Damien Dumusois had to plead with the audience, 'Please, not while the ball is in play,' but his pleas had little effect. Djokovic engaged with a fan seated close by who shouted 'Turbo Tomas' before Djokovic's serve and another who called 'out' during a rally in the next point. Pointing to the heckler, Djokovic gestured towards the exit, but remained diplomatic in his post-match interview. This incident followed Danielle Collins's outburst after her victory on Thursday over Australian qualifier Destanee Aiava, where the American strongly objected to jeering following a service fault. Collins commented, 'A number of players are going to go away having been brutalised by our crowd. It is called the Happy Open, I think there's a lot to be learned. There'll be some efforts made. Possibly they could have some people like they have at golf that can hold up 'QUIET' signs at times and if patrons don't adhere to that request they can be asked to leave.' Meanwhile, two-time women's champion Naomi Osaka retired after losing the first set to Belinda Bencic. Looking ahead to the rest of the tournament, the focus will now shift to Alex de Minaur, Jannik Sinner, Emma Radacanu and many more. Speaking after his gruelling victory over Aleksandar Vukic, Jack Draper expressed his admiration for Vukic's resilience, stating, 'I thought he was done but then he just came back from the dead, it was incredible.' Draper also thanked the crowd for their prolonged support, suggesting that tennis itself was the ultimate winner. The match between Draper and Vukic was a captivating display of athleticism and determination, described as 'possibly the match of the tournament so far.' Draper fought back in the fourth set, winning a tense tiebreaker, and then held his nerve in a 10-point tiebreak in the fifth set. Despite the loss, Vukic should be proud of his performance, as he reached the furthest he has ever progressed in the Australian Open. Although the Aussie rallied and forced a tiebreak in the fourth set, Draper ultimately prevailed in the fifth set, breaking Vukic's serve and taking the first advantage. The match continued to be a back-and-forth battle, with both players showcasing their skills and determination. The final match of the day on Rod Laver Arena saw an unseeded Serb win the first set against the number nine seed. In the first set, Djokovic narrowly won in a tiebreak but dominated the second set, winning it 6-1.
