More About Dreams of Daraa Director M. Reilly Dowd, who previously worked on 2019's, The Last Ride, has been following the story since she herself was 25 and close with Hanadi. Working on such difficult material in life-and-death circumstances led to Dowd questioning her role several times. When she began the project, she explained, "I could not have imagined that a film intended to be about laughter and healing would later lead me to orchestrate a family’s escape from Syria.
In order to remove some of the desensitization that viewers have experienced after years of non-stop war coverage, Dowd introduced animation as a way to "draw viewers in, bringing them closer to the human side of the story and allowing them to imagine reality for themselves." As seen in the trailer itself, the animation is interspersed when reality itself becomes too much, and it is juxtaposed with actual drawings from the girls.
I’m from Daraa, an area of Southern Syria. Syria is the country we knew when we were kids, where we played, went to school and dreamed big. We lived without fear.
