As any commuter can attest, Sydney’s bus drivers unfairly wear the public opprobrium for the problems of the network, which continues to haemorrhage drivers and cancel services at a time when it is needed more than ever.
Sydney’s bus network continues to haemorrhage drivers, creating anger and despair among people hit by cancelled or late services at a time when high employment, cost-of-living pressures and the return to worksites after the pandemic means they are needed more than ever.
With the city’s bus network now privatised, Transport for NSW and the nine companies responsible for operating Sydney’s buses have spent years trying to recruit more drivers. But high employment in NSW makes success slow in coming – from more than 500 vacancies across the city in April, Transport for NSW now needs 370 drivers.
Federal and state governments on both sides of politics have enthusiastically embraced privatisation since the Hawke government’s National Competition Policy Review – also known as the Hilmer report – put it on the agenda in 1992 as a new source of revenue. The O’Farrell government started the privatisation of the then State Transit Authority 12 years ago.
Fulfilling the election promise, the Minns government established a Bus Industry Taskforce, made up of relevant leaders from unions, government and other sectors, aimed at identifying issues and solutions in the troubled sector.Despite looming changes, the bus system continues to underperform, with little incentive to improve.
