UPDATE: The suspected driver of a stolen Jeep who crashed into a West Metro Fire Rescue ambulance Sunday evening in Lakewood is in custody, authorities said Tuesday.
The driver of the Jeep was identified Tuesday by Lakewood police as 20-year-old Armando Casillas, of Denver. He is being held at the Jefferson County jail on suspicion of multiple crimes including vehicular assault, aggravated motor vehicle theft, and DUI.
The incident began around 5:40 p.m. Sunday when Lakewood police located a Jeep that had been reported stolen at West 14th Avenue and Reed Street, according to aOfficers approached the Jeep on foot, but the driver sped off, Lakewood police said. The officers did not pursue the Jeep, police said, but as the driver fled, they crashed into the ambulance.
Three people inside the stolen Jeep, including Casillas, were taken into custody and hospitalized with injuries, Lakewood police said. The two paramedics have since been released from the hospital and “are fine,” West Metro officials said in a tweet.Editor’s note: This story was updated on Dec. 6 with the identity and arrest of the suspected driver in the incident.
