Driver strikes, critically injures scooter rider in University City [Breaking]
A driver struck and critically injured a 47-year-old man Monday who turned in front of her car against a red light in University City, according to police.
The crash left the victim hospitalized with life-threatening head injuries and a broken neck, San Diego police Officer John Buttle said. It happened about 2:20 p.m. Monday on Nobel Drive near Regents Road, just southwest of the Westfield UTC mall, Buttle said in a statement. The victim, riding a Bird rental scooter, was heading east on Nobel when he attempted to turn left against a red arrow, Buttle said. The driver of a Hyundai Elantra, heading east, struck the scooter rider just after her light turned green.
The rider sustained a broken neck, soft tissue damage to his head and face, a fractured right femur and other injuries, Buttle said. The sedan’s driver, a 58-year-old woman, was not injured.
