A driver is dead in "tragic circumstances" after a car plunged into a river in northern New South Wales.

Two people were in the vehicle when it veered off the road and drove into the Richmond River in South Ballina just before noon.Passers-by and several police officers dived into the water to help her escape, and to attempt to rescue the driver as the car sank.Police said "specialist resources", including PolAir and police divers, were expected to arrive this evening, and the car would be recovered.
