Mr Weaver thinks many mass-market buyers will wait for one more purchase cycle and want to see an EV in their neighbour’s driveway first, even though interest is rising. He said the fuel emission standards would be a positive step but all players need to be working together to ensure there is a balanced approach to the transition, particularly if there is only limited supply of EVs in the short term.“That acts as a stick as opposed to a carrot,” he said. “That could end up being an inhibitor”.
The two biggest selling new vehicle models in Australia for the past couple of years have consistently been the Toyota Hi-Lux ute, and the Ford Range ute. Toyota Hi-Lux made up almost 8 per cent of all new vehicles sold in Australia in July.
