Sky News Business editor Ticky Fullerton says it’s “a great day” for the government, as the unemployment defied many expectations. The rate for the month of August dropped to 6.8 per cent.

More than 110,000 jobs were added in the month, and the participation rate increased to 64.8 per cent. Full time jobs increased by 36,200 and part time by a massive 74,800. “The government will now be saying JobKeeper, JobSeeker are actually working to getting the economy cranked up again,” Ms Fullerton said. “We were expected to go up to 7.7 per cent.”

Australian students working as harvesters for struggling farmers is a 'national need' | Sky News AustraliaAustralian students working as harvesters for struggling farmers is a 'national need' | Sky News AustraliaLiberal MP Julian Leeser says there is a national need to encourage Australian students to work as harvesters for struggling farmers, which is why a HECS discount has been introduced as an extra incentive.\n\nIt comes as the agriculture industry’s usual influx of backpackers who join the fruit-picking force at an estimated worth of $13 billion has been impeded by the coronavirus pandemic.\n\nAccordingly, the Coalition has proposed a HECS discount for Australian students who work in the fresh produce industry in a bid to help struggling farmers.\n\n“We’ve got a great country, and the working holiday maker experience is terrific,” Mr Leeser told Sky News host Peta Credlin.\n\n“We heard stories that farmers are already pulling out their trees.\n\nIf farmers across the country are doing that, it will mean less money for the agricultural sector, it’ll mean less free exports, it’ll mean less fruit and vegetables on our shelves and it’ll mean higher prices.\n\n“There’s a real national need to do something to encourage people to go and do this work.”\n\nImage: News Corp Australia

Palaszczuk takes advice from health experts and ‘taxpayer funded pollsters’ | Sky News AustraliaPalaszczuk takes advice from health experts and ‘taxpayer funded pollsters’ | Sky News AustraliaSky News host Chris Kenny says Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk does not need expensive pollsters to tell her not to “kill the joint” because she’s convinced any infection is a failure.\n\nIt’s been reported the Department of Premier and Cabinet hired pollsters to gauge voter approval of the government’s COVID-19 restrictions.\n\nThe premier’s department spent more than $500,000 on the polls and a political strategist to shape Queensland’s economic recovery out of COVID-19.\n\nMr Kenny said this was a “shocking misuse of taxpayer’s money” and clearly contradicted her constant assurances that she is acting solely on medical advice.\n\n“Now it looks like she also acts on the advice of taxpayer funded pollsters,” he said.\n\n“You need a poll to see how people are doing in lockdown or without our jobs?\n\n“Let me give you the big tip premier, I reckon they’ll tell you it sucks.\n\n“You need to allow maximum freedom, maximum normality, not kill the joint because you’ve convinced yourself any infections at all constitute a failure.”\n\nImage: Getty
