Mates Barry Holland and Ross Stewart died after they were struck by a father of two who had been using methylamphetamine to combat fatigue, a court has heard.
A 38 year-old man who struck and killed two motorbike riders while driving with ice in his system has been jailed.A driver who killed two motorcyclists while under the influence of the drug ice will spend at least two years in prison.
The court heard Mr Stewart died at the scene, while Mr Holland suffered serious injuries, including having a leg amputated, before he died in hospital on January 8, 2022. Judge Lauritsen told the court a forensic physician considered there to be "significant levels of methylamphetamine in his system" which would have affected his driving skills.The court heard Mr Holland's widow, Shirley, had made an impact statement to the court during an earlier hearing.
Judge Lauritsen also referenced a victim impact statement from Graham Holland, Barry's younger brother.Judge Lauritsen described Barry Holland as more than a father to his only daughter, Narelle Barnes."His death has left a void in her heart which will never be filled."She was never able to speak to her father," Judge Lauritsen said.
"You are genuinely remorseful, you assisted at the scene of the accident, you cooperated with the police, you have very strong family support.
