Gulet Ahmed, who was intoxicated and speeding, caused a collision that resulted in the death of 16-year-old Katherine Osborne. The driver will serve a minimum of 10 years and 9 months in prison.
A drunk driver, who was also high on ice, has been ordered to spend nearly 15 years behind bars after smashing into a family's car in Melbourne last year. Gulet Ahmed will have to serve a minimum of 10 years and 9 months' jail, and could reapply for his licence once freed. Gulet Ahmed was drunk, high on ice and speeding through Melbourne 's inner-north in March last year. The chaos lasted 13 minutes, but the consequences will now last a lifetime for a devastated family.
On March 11, the first reports of Ahmed's erratic driving in Flemington were made to police at 11:40am. His Volkswagen sedan hit a car, but he kept going. At 11:53am, he ran his third red light, travelling at 103kph through the intersection of Lygon and Elgin streets in Carlton. Ahmed was found to be under the influence of both drugs and alcohol at the time of the crash. Katherine Osborne, 16, was fatally wounded. Her parents Michael and Alexandra suffered serious injuries, along with pedestrians Travis Oliver and Jeffrey Broussard who were also hurt in the collision. In a daze, Ahmed stumbled out of his vehicle and lashed out at bystanders, before he was pinned to the ground in a citizen's arrest. Family heartbroken by the loss of teenage daughter County Court Judge Anne Hassan today labelled Ahmed's behaviour as 'abysmal', describing the crash as an 'appalling tragedy' that robbed a young woman of her future. As Katherine's parents watched on, Judge Hassan said the 14 years and 9 months prison term handed to Ahmed was not a measure of the teenager's life. 'Katherine was an intelligent, caring and capable young woman on the cusp of her adult life,' Judge Hassan said. As the judge noted, Katherine would have been graduating from high school this month, and due to start university in 2025
