A man has been jailed after he struck and killed a boy while drunk driving on Queensland's Sunshine Coast in 2023.A P-plater who struck and killed a young boy on Father's Day last year had only just had his licence reinstated after more than a dozen traffic convictions, a court has heard during sentencing.
Dawlon suffered severe injuries including a fractured skull, major fractures to his leg and arm, a shattered pelvis and bleeding on the brain.He was flown to Queensland Children's Hospital but died on September 17, two days after medical staff turned off his life support. The Crown tendered the 27-year-old's extensive traffic history, which included nine convictions for speeding, two for disqualified driving and two convictions for driving under the influence.The court heard Semler-Mitaros had lost his licence six times since 2015 and had only just regained his provisional licence before the fatal incident.
She said she wanted Dawlon's death to serve as a reminder ahead of Road Safety Week later this month, and urged people to remain vigilant. Dawlon's family were visibly upset outside court and said they did not feel the sentence provided adequate justice.
