The first part of the state of Ohio's split waterfowl hunting season is about to get underway.

, when ducks and geese pass through on their way to winter havens, has a legacy that belies the rather modest number of hunters it attracts in Ohio these days.

Those early concerns triggered regulations, state and federal wildlife agencies, and organized public efforts.What was started a long time ago, then, helped ensure the oncoming hunt for geese, ducks, coots and mergansers that begins Saturday in most of Ohio, with the exception of the Lake Erie Zone. Hunting in the South Zone, which includes most of central Ohio, runs daily through Oct. 30 from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.

Some Canada geese migrate through Ohio from nesting areas near James Bay in Canada. Many of the ducks that fly through the state during autumn come from North America’s “duck factory,” the nesting grounds in the so-called Prairie Pothole region of the Dakotas and the Canadian plains.
