Despite the sequel being recently delayed from November 3 to March 15, 2024, Villeneuve has big ideas for how he wants Frank Herbert's Dune to grow beyond its second installment.
In an interview with Empire Magazine, Villeneuve explains that it would be his biggest dream to continue the movie series with Dune 3, an adaptation of Dune: Messiah. After explaining that the book was written in reaction to the readers' thinking that Paul Atreides was a hero, Villeneuve reveals that he had started writing something about a potential third movie, which he says would be the last of the film trilogy.
If I succeed in making a trilogy, that would be the dream. Dune Messiah was written in reaction to the fact that people perceived Paul Atreides as a hero, which is not what he wanted to do. My adaptation [of Dune] is closer to his idea that it’s actually a warning. After that, the books become more… esoteric. I will say, there are words on paper.
It's Not The First Time Villeneuve Revealed His Dune Trilogy Plans While Villeneuve had wanted to adapt Herbert's Dune since he was a child and has been fulfilling a lifelong dream by splitting the movie into two parts, he had always left the door open for a potential third movie.
When the first part of Dune was released during the COVID-19 pandemic, Villeneuve blasted Warner Bros. for releasing the movie simultaneously in theaters and on the then-named HBO Max streaming service, stating that the movie's franchise plans would be in flux and that piracy would ultimately prevail. However, the movie was a considerable success in cinemas, and a sequel was greenlit a few days after the film was released in the wake of its commercial and critical acclaim.
