Dungeness crab die-off underway along US West Coast FOX13
The Lummi Indian Business Council has passed a resolution last week declaring a disaster as they deal with an invasive grab species in the Lummi Sea Pond, according to the Tacoma News Tribune. While the official cause of both significant die-offs is unknown, NOAA said thatScientists and research institutions are focusing efforts on Dungeness crab and krill to ultimately improve the management of fisheries.
Regulations on the harvesting of crabs vary by state, but fishermen in California will likely experience a double whammy, withRecent sightings of humpback whales along the coast have forced the closure of the harvesting season until at least December 1. "Based on recent surveys, large aggregations of humpback whales continue to forage in California coastal waters and allowing the use of crab traps would increase the risk of an entanglement," said Charlton Bonham, director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.
A reassessment of the whales' status is expected to occur later in November, with the hope that fisheries will open through spring 2023.that I have read and agree
