A few miles from Bulsho Coffee Shop, Syed Abbas, 49, was busy preparing Pakistani iftar orders at theAs the aroma of pakoras and vada wafted by, Abbas reminisced about iftar in his native Karachi. There, street vendors sold dishes like chana chaat, an explosion of sweet and savory flavors made using chickpeas, chutney and yogurt, near the shore of the Arabian Sea.
Abbas, an electrical engineer-turned-chef, said that in addition to private orders, he now makes iftar meals for his mosque, which provides food to congregants and the needy. “You make money … all year round, but I’m glad that I have this opportunity to cook for customers as well as charitable work,” he said.
