Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has said the Albanese Government’s attempt to “end the climate wars” will take Australia down a “very dangerous path”.
The legislation will enshrine the government’s 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction targets into law and received support from a majority of the crossbench and one Liberal MP, Tasmanian Bridget Archer.
“When you hear the Labor Party say this is an end to the climate wars what they’re really saying with this bill is it’s a start to your gas and electricity prices just going up and up,” he said. “Labor is taking us down a very dangerous path where you are going to see much higher electricity prices and much higher gas prices and unreliability,” he said.
Liberal leader Peter Dutton said earlier in the week that he would adopt a more ambitious emissions reduction target than his predecessor.
