Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles and Opposition Leader Peter Dutton have discussed their opposing views on slamming Australia's border shut to Indonesia over foot and mouth disease concerns.
The political leaders, from the two opposing major parties, appeared on the Today show on Friday morning amid growing calls from the Opposition to close Australia off from the Southeast Asian country.
Mr Marles defended Labor's decision to hold off on making a border call despite the ongoing pressure. "It's not controlled in Indonesia and given the significant two-way traffic between Bali and Perth and the rest of the country, through Jakarta, into Sydney, Melbourne, etc this is a very significant issue."
FMD is a highly contagious disease of livestock causing fever followed by the development of vesicles in the mouth and on the feet. Mr Watt confirmed on Wednesday that viral fragments had been found in a beef product brought in by a traveller from Indonesia. “We have no plans to close the borders, either in Indonesia or to any of the other many countries that have foot and mouth disease,” he told Sky News Australia.
