The opposition leader commended the government's move to stop Russia building a new embassy next to Parliament House, saying the Australian people 'won't tolerate' foreign interference.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Mr Dutton backed the move by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to tear up the lease for the plot of land upon which Russia was planning to build the embassy.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton commended the government's move to stop Russia building a new embassy next to Parliament House, saying the Australian people"won't tolerate" foreign interference. Picture: NCA NewsWire/Martin Ollman The National Capital Authority, which controls the leasing of land in Canberra, had earlier attempted to revoke the agreement with Russia citing the fact it had failed to begin construction on a new embassy despite holding the lease since 2008. However, Moscow sued the NCA successfully and last month declared the attempt to revoke the lease was"invalid and of no effect." Home Affairs Minister Clare O'Neil said no foreign country would be allowed to make use of the land going forward, but that the government was still considering"options" as to what they could do with the location.
