Peter Dutton applauds Donald Trump's proposal to transform Gaza, while Anthony Albanese urges caution and cites the President's inconsistent positions.
Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has praised Donald Trump 's proposal to 'level' Gaza and rebuild it as a 'riviera' under American control, calling him a 'big thinker and a deal maker' with a 'genuine desire to see peace and stability' in the Middle East. Trump made the comments after a meeting with Israel i Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggesting neighboring Arab countries could resettle Palestinian residents.
While Trump's top diplomat and spokesperson have since walked back the idea of permanent relocation, Dutton expressed confidence in the president's intentions. He emphasized Trump's business acumen and negotiating skills, arguing that he seeks deals where both sides contribute and no one is exploited. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, however, declined to offer a 'running commentary' on Trump's statements, citing the president's tendency to change positions frequently. He pointed to Trump's backtracking on imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico as an example. Albanese reiterated Australia's longstanding position supporting a two-state solution, where both Israel and Palestine have the right to exist and live in peace and security. David Coleman, the Coalition's new foreign affairs spokesperson, echoed Albanese's stance, stating that there are 'no proposals to make any changes' to Australia's position. Dutton suggested that Egypt and Jordan should contribute to the rebuilding of the region and accept Palestinian refugees. He argued that Trump wants other countries to share the responsibility for global security and peace, rather than relying solely on the United States. Alex Ryvchin, co-chief executive of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, expressed concern over Trump's proposal, describing it as 'bold and crazy.' He emphasized that no one supports ethnic cleansing or the permanent removal of Palestinians from their homes
