Peter Dutton has committed to adopting a more ambitious 2030 emissions reduction target than his predecessor Scott Morrison but has refused to support Labor’s Climate Change Bill.

The Albanese Government tabled its signature Climate Change Bill last week with the House of Representatives set to vote on it in the coming days.

Mr Dutton has again refused to support Labor’s legislation and stood by earlier comments that the bill was a political “stunt”, according to Coalition sources. Labor has urged the parliament and more specifically the crossbench to support the bill, but has warned the government would move ahead with its agenda whether the legislation was passed or not.

“Mr Bragg quoted a briefing to the party room from Federal Liberal director Andrew Hirst last week which said the Coalition would have to win back inner urban seats in order to be re-elected,” Clennell said referencing party sources. The legislation will pass the House of Representatives this week but won’t be voted on in the Senate until the next sitting fortnight in September.
