Emergency Management Minister Bridget McKenzie says Defence Minister Peter Dutton today made it clear the Australian government takes foreign interference “incredibly seriously”.
This comes after ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess revealed the organisation disrupted a plot to interfere in Australia’s democracy, which involved a “puppeteer” who is a wealthy individual with deep ties to a foreign government. “I think what Dutton made very, very clear today in the house was that we as a government take foreign interference incredibly seriously,” Ms McKenzie told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
“I think the speech by Mike Burgess overnight – the head of ASIO – clearly outlines the risk and that we need to take this threat seriously from foreign actors.”
