Opposition Leader Peter Dutton says he makes “no apologies” for cancelling the submarine deal with France saying it was in Australia’s “best interest”.

Australia last year cancelled a multi-billion-dollar order for submarines with France’s Naval Group to instead sign a nuclear-powered submarine deal with the United States and the United Kingdom.

“Unfortunately the French were always going to be upset at the breaking of that contract given the amount of money involved,” he told Sky News Australia.“And of course our intention, had we been re-elected, would have been to re-engage and mend the relationship with the French.”
