Colleagues expect Peter Dutton to announce within days he will run for the Liberal leadership, although some question whether he can win back ‘teal’ seats.

Colleagues said Mr Tehan may be more interested in the deputy’s role to heal the party rather than fight over leadership.
“Peter’s public perception is not always an accurate reflection of where Peter’s true stance is,” Senator Birmingham said. South Australian backbencher Alex Antic said the party needed to go back to its centre-right roots. “The time is now to understand that the Liberal Party’s experiment with the poison of leftism and progressivism must be over,” he said.
“We are within 24 hours of quite a devastating result. I’m not commenting on any leadership speculation,” she said.
