Anthony Albanese and senior cabinet ministers have welcomed Julian Leeser’s resignation from the Liberal frontbench and launched an attack on Peter Dutton’s “partisan narrow” opposition to the Voice.

Mr Leeser confirmed he would step down as shadow indigenous affairs minister and shadow attorney general less than a week after the Liberal Party revealed it would oppose the Voice.

Senator Wong welcomed Mr Leeser’s decision and said he had shown “real strength” by putting his “principles ahead of partisan politics”. “Mr Leeser reflected today that no great nation has ever been built by dividing it. That's why it's so disappointing that Mr Dutton has made the choice he has made.”This referendum is about two issues: recognition and consultation. And millions of Australians are ready to vote yes to make it a reality.Prime Minister Anthony Albanese took time out of his holiday to praise the Liberal MP’s “principled decision” to campaign for the yes vote.

“It's not too late for Mr Dutton to change his mind. It’s time for Mr Dutton to join with millions of Australians who say Yes to constitutional recognition. “I don't believe the government has handled this process particularly well and I've been very critical of the Prime Minister and of the government,” Mr Leeser said at a press conference in Sydney on Tuesday.

Finally, Mr Leeser called for the removal of the second clause of the constitutional amendment to leave the “scope and powers of the Voice completely to parliament”.
