Opposition leader Peter Dutton has spruiked his plans to slash immigration and ban foreign home ownership to ease the cost of living in Australia, saying 'we just don't have the houses' to cope with the levels of migration under the Albanese Government.

Opposition leader Peter Dutton spruiks plans to slash migration, ban foreign home ownership in pursuit of 'great Australian dream'

"Millions of people around the country are worried about the homeownership crisis that Labor's created, you can't bring a million people in over two years and only have a quarter of a million homes that have been built," he said. "We just don't have the housing. I think we've been listening to Australians in rental accommodation who want to buy their first home, who just want to get into the housing market, and I want to restore that great Australian dream of homeownership for them."

Both issues have been exasperated by an influx of 548,800 immigrants entering Australia in the 12 months to September 2023, a pace which is outstripping the rate of construction of new homes. Meanwhile, refugee arrivals would be reduced by a third and foreign investors and temporary residents would be banned from buying established homes for two years.

Earlier on Thursday, the Opposition leader clashed with Government Services Minister Bill Shorten on Nine, who mocked Mr Dutton's proposal by sarcastically suggesting Australians were cheering him on.
