From 2024, all three benefit assessments will be merged into a single assessment service

The Department for Work and Pensions has announced it will introduce a major change to PIP, Universal Credit, and Employment and Support Allowance assessments.

It comes after current assessment procedures for Personal Independence Payment were criticised in a debate triggered by a series of petitions. One petition called for a 'complete overhaul' of the PIP process which it described as "inhumane and degrading, Birmingham Live reports.During the parliamentary debate, ministers heard how people who applied for PIP were assessed by healthcare professionals who were not experts in their particular medical condition.

"Claimants will need to interact only with their local health assessment provider, regardless of which benefit they are applying for. That provides a stepping stone to our longer-term aim to create, from 2029, a single new health assessment service for all benefits that use a health assessment. The DWP explained that the new single Health Assessment Service for all benefits is "complex and ambitious" and will represent a major change to how it manages assessments. It claimed that the department is gathering new assessment provider contracts and will start operating form 2024.
