A Cold Weather Payment eligibility and payment shake-up is needed, according to researchers
Experts say that the Department for Work and Pensions' £25 Cold Weather Payments are insufficient and should be replaced by daily £10 payouts. The call for a significant overhaul in eligibility and payment methods under a Labour government comes after research revealed that the present £25 payments, which run from November to spring, do not cover even half of the additional costs of staying warm during cold spells.
Dr Tina Fawcett of Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute commented: "This simple change, which will not be expensive, will help households stay warm when it really matters. It will ensure the Government can deliver the right support at the right time."
