The DWP is urging those of State Pension age to check if they qualify for this benefit, which could be worth over £3,000 annually

The Department for Work and Pensions has highlighted that a staggering one million homes across the UK could be missing out on a vital £65 weekly payment.

It points out that many older people might mistakenly believe they're not entitled to Pension Credit due to their savings or owning property. To help clarify eligibility for this benefit, which can amount to over £3,000 annually, the DWP has released two informative videos on YouTube. One video is directed at potential beneficiaries, while the other is designed to inform their family members, as reported by Wales Online. DWP Minister Laura Trott expressed her commitment to increasing the uptake of Pension Credit in the House of Commons. She acknowledged the challenges of automatic enrolment, stating: "It is difficult to enrol people automatically on Pension Credit given the data the Government holds.

You can kick-start your application up to four months prior to reaching State Pension age. You're allowed to claim any time after you reach State Pension age, but your claim can only be backdated for three months. This means that you can receive up to three months of Pension Credit in your initial payment if you were eligible during that period. If you're backdating your claim, you'll need specifics of your income, savings and investments on the date you want your claim to commence. To verify your entitlement, ring the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234 or use the GOV. UK Pension Credit calculator here to discover how much you could receive.
