Rose Koss embraces Vicki Hernandez after a memorial for the 160 individuals experiencing homelessness who died in 2022 in San Antonio. Both women work with SAMMinistry who helped organize the memorial. During the memorial, held at Milam Park, each name was read out loud followed by the ringing of a bell and the lighting of a candle for each individual.SAN ANTONIO — Red high-top sneakers, black knife-sharp stiletto heels and faded cowboy boots were among the hundreds of shoes in Milam Park.
“The visual is for people to see the shoes, to show each life had a value and a relevance. These people were fathers, brothers, sisters, mothers and children to someone,” said Maliha Imami, chief of development and external operations for SAMMinistries.Haven for Hope sheltering record numbers of homeless families, children, single women
A pink metallic puffy coat and a royal purple varsity jacket peeked out the corner of a bag of free coats on a table beside the Milam Park gazebo, where the speeches took place. The winter items were for anyone that needed them before the freeze expected to hit on Christmas weekend. The table saw a steady stream of homeless individuals, taking coats to prepare for the cold.
This was the eighth vigil with the organization for Nikisha Baker, CEO of SAMMinistries. She has practice leading the event, but each one brings out palpable emotion. It’s hard knowing they weren’t able to make a difference with those people, she said, but it feeds her motivation to continue SAMMinistries’ work in the year ahead.
