Counsel assisting Melia Benn, one of just two Indigenous barristers in Queensland, said her people were “dying for their story to be heard”.“Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples have been studied for almost 250 years. Unfortunately, though, these studies have often been conducted through one-way glass with no sound,” she said.
“Today, the direct evidence of witnesses will stretch back to the mid-50s and 40s. Tomorrow, those memories and that direct evidence … will be lost to the sands of time.”
