Multiple tennis Grand Slam champion and disability advocate Dylan Alcott took a brief moment to make a joke at his own expense in front of a star-studded crowd after he was named the 2022 Australian of the Year.

Alcott said it was thanks to his sexologist partner Chantelle Otten, his loving family and best friends that knew he was"worthy", which made him"proud" to have a disability.

"I think standing ovations are one of the most ironic things in the world, by the way. But I'll take them, without a doubt," he joked. It wasn't only his achievements on the court that was recognised but also his philanthropy work where he is focused on providing a better future for Australians living with disabilities.

Alcott has grown his media career since his rise to fame where he wrote an autobiography titled Able, which discusses navigating life as a paraplegic and how he stayed positive despite adversities.
