Incidents of rechargeable batteries exploding are increasing everywhere, not just in B.C. Here are some safety tips.
Last June, Vancouver firefighters fought a fire at the Hotel Empress, a single-room occupancy hotel in the Downtown Eastside, where a 32-year-old man died after being blown out of a second-storey window by an e-bike battery explosion.
Rechargeable batteries were also linked to the deaths of four other people in 2022 — a tenant at a West End apartment and three family members, including a nine-year-old, of an east Vancouver home.Article content Outside of Vancouver, a fire that burned down a house in Mill Bay on Vancouver Island in August was blamed on an e-bike battery.
In 2021, a house in North Saanich burned to the ground after a battery pack used to convert a bike to an e-bike caught fire. The owners have filed a lawsuit against the Burnaby battery company that sold them the kit, claiming damages to rebuild the house and replace its contents, according to a writ filed in B.C. Supreme Court.
And also last year, an electric bike caught on fire behind a downtown Penticton apartment building, prompting an investigation from the city’s fire department, and a fire caused by a charging e-bike destroyed a shed in Kamloops.
