Early studies suggest people who contract the Omicron COVID-19 variant are far less likely to face severe illness and admission to hospital compared to the Delta strain.

Early studies published in both the UK and South Africa suggest that people who contract the Omicron COVID-19 variant are far less likely to face severe illness and admission to hospital than those who contract the Delta variant.

These UK findings follow the release of a South African study which said people diagnosed with Omicron between October 1 and November 30 were 80 per cent less likely to be admitted to hospital than those infected with Delta over the same period of time. One of the authors of the South African study — Professor Cheryl Cohen of the National Institute for Communicable Diseases — said it was unclear, "whether the picture will be similar in countries where there are high levels of vaccination but very low levels of previous infection".
