A federal pledge to spend more money on local industry has won support from voters despite a political row about whether it could waste public funds.

A federal pledge to spend more money on local industry has won early support from voters despite a political row about whether it could waste public funds, as Labor prepares to reveal more outlays in the May 14 budget.

The Resolve Political Monitor, conducted for this masthead by research company Resolve Strategic, finds that 75 per cent of voters remain unaware of the Future Made In Australia plan and only 25 per cent know of the pledge. Another 34 per cent said the government should not subsidise industries that could not survive on their own, and should instead spend the money in other areas.

Coalition treasury spokesman Angus Taylor has warned that the spending could add to inflation and repeat the problems seen with heavy government outlays over past decades.
