Graziers are hoping an east coast low dumping rain across NSW will spur a last minute burst of pasture growth for producers offloading stock, and crops will be boosted — if there's enough sunshine in coming weeks.
Rain has been welcomed by farmers across northern New South Wales ahead of winter.Livestock producers will need a month of warm weather to promote pasture growth, while those harvesting summer crops will stop until the ground dries out.
"It's the difference between having to think about supplementary feeding during winter or being able to get that rye grass or oat crop in," he said.Torrential rain across New South Wales and Queensland brings weather and wind warnings, raising concerns over flooding between the Blue Mountains and Narooma.
"Many of the international models are showing there's about a 60 to 70 per cent chance of La Niña developing by late winter or early spring."La Niña typically brings increased rainfall and milder temperatures but Mr White said there was no certainty one would develop. “ just starting to show signs of wilting in the afternoons, we could double our dry matter if we get some rain," he said.Southern NSW cropper Ben Langtry, from Marrar near Wagga Wagga, said the 15mm of rain in his gauge was perfectly timed for his winter cropping program, but was hoping for more.
