The senior set the section record as a freshman
On the eve of last year’s San Diego Section Division I swimming championships, Eastlake High’s Emily Lundgren received a text message from Titans coach Steve Wiggs pertaining to her entry in the girls 100-yard breaststroke.
In a change last year coming off the pandemic, the prelims and finals were conducted on the same day as swimming marked its return. Among the congratulations Lundgren received soon after setting the record was one from Washington State coach Matt Leach, whom Lundgren already knew from the recruiting process. That helped solidify her decision to commit to WSU, across the state from her early childhood home in Whidbey Island.
Lundgren traces her start in swimming to when she was 7 years old and on hand for a travel meet with her older sister, Elisabeth, now a senior at UC Santa Cruz. Since she was along for the trip, Emily figured she’d soon like to get involved herself. Emily may be underselling her overall abilities since she followed her freshman section title in the 200 IM by placing ninth at the state meet — first in the consolation heat. She had the sixth-best time overall .
