It’s ice houses, oysters, big tickets, tacos and a trailer on this almost-downtown stretch of King William and Southtown restaurants including The Friendly Spot, Liberty Bar, Pizzeria Vesuvio, Tito’s Mexican Restaurant and Up Scale.

even the flea-market fruit-stand energy of ChurroStar generate waves like needles on an EKG, pulsing alongside the law office bungalows and the gloomy Greek Revival grandeur of the King William Manor hotel.

Emily and Houston Carpenter live in the neighborhood, too. Both San Antonio natives, they started Little Em’s in 2020 not just to feed themselves in the broader adulting sense, but to, you know, themselves. “We wanted a place for fresh oysters, some good wine and a good burger,” said Houston Carpenter, at the time a construction guy with zero restaurant experience.

But for this report, King William is where the blood flows, where it feeds The Friendly Spot, Liberty Bar, Pizzeria Vesuvio, Tito’s and Up Scale. It’s the latest edition of our Eat the Street series, telling the stories of the great restaurant streets of San Antonio and five restaurants that shape the heart of those streets.

But yeah. I would have. I just didn’t have the option when they were that age, when I worked late and they never slept. I could’ve had a good bacon cheeseburger and a cold draft beer from a long tap wall. Or fish tacos and a margarita. Or crunchy boneless wings with a spicy Asian glow in a paper boat with celery and carrots. And they would have loved Mexican street corn nachos with pico de gallo and queso fresco in between trips to the rainbow slide.

And while the place on Josephine with the carnival midway tilt eventually transformed into the stylish new home of Carriqui at the Pearl in September, Liberty Bar never let go of its funk factor.

But Randy died suddenly in 2019, and after Julie sold the restaurant, the three coworkers came to realize they no longer shared the same vision of Southtown as the new owners. So they bought a food trailer from Julie and started their own slice of that vision. That was March 2020, and Pizzeria Vesuvio was born.
