The issue for the UK Conservatives isn’t race or gender. It is a combination of economics and the ability to connect with the spectrum of British society
There’s a saying in the UK that Boris Johnson has brought down three prime ministers. His campaign for Brexit brought down David Cameron, his campaign against Theresa May’s negotiating position on Brexit brought her down and his personal behaviour broughtThere’s plenty of truth in that, but it is worth remembering that Johnson is a larger-than-life personality.
Regardless of the scandals, Boris Johnson was one of the most short-lived and substantial prime ministers of the past 120 years. He took the UK out of the European Union with a negotiated deal that maintained free trade between the UK and the EU. He navigated the country through the COVID-19 crisis as well as any leader of a major economy and administered the fastest rollout of vaccines in the world.
This is a great tribute to the Conservative Party, which leads the way in the UK in the war against salami-slicing society into different identities. There’s a lesson there for Australia. The Liberal Party in Australia should be proclaiming its profound belief in the equal value of all individuals regardless of the characteristics they were born with.
Liz Truss holds a traditional array of Conservative views and has attracted strong support from the right of the party. Frankly, I don’t think any of them will have the broad electoral appeal that Boris Johnson had. None of the candidates has his almost unique combination of intellectual ability, the use of language to inspire and abuse, good old-fashioned charisma and the capacity to connect with people from all walks of life.
