The 53-year-old from Padstow remembers getting cold and collapsing. Over the next hour, a machine worked to keep his brain and vital organs functioning.

An ECMO device pumps blood into the brain and vital organs to keep patients alive while doctors can address a cardiac arrest .An ambulance carrying an ECMO machine is attending to cardiac arrest s in Sydney this year.

That machine is an ECMO — extracorporeal membrane oxygenation — which is currently being trialled by NSW Ambulance in Sydney. The machines have existed since the 1970s but were only used in clinical settings like hospitals. Now they fit into the boot of a 4WD.Sydney is just one of four places in the world using ECMO in ambulances, as part of the trial that begun in August last year.

The machine rides with a specialised team, including a critical care paramedic and two specialist doctors specialised in either anaesthesia or emergency medicine.People are less likely to give a woman CPR due to fears of hurting her or being accused of inappropriate touching. One Australian CPR provider is trying to change that by putting breasts on training mannequins. She said health data shows 488 patients in NSW in a three-year period could be eligible to be treated by a mobile ECMO.
