Disgraced former Labor politicians Eddie Obeid and Ian Macdonald, along with Obeid’s son Moses, have lost their bid for freedom ahead of an appeal against their conviction over a rigged mining licence.there is “no public interest” in keeping them behind bars while they await their appeal – which the court heard could take place in September next year.

Crown prosecutor Sophie Callan SC said while each party had “demonstrated a serious attempt to mount a serious appeal”, all the grounds proposed “do not enjoy reasonable prospects”.
