The Wallabies’ humiliating year from hell is complete after Eddie Jones sensationally quit as coach following high-level meetings. The 63-year-old returned for a second stint in charge of the Australian national team ahead of this month’s Rugby World Cup on a contract running until the end of the 2027 edition on home soil. But a series of selection controversies preceded a run of shocking results that culminated in the Wallabies’ worst ever performance at the sport’s showpiece event.

“The situation reminded me of when Wayne Bennett let Wally Lewis go,” Jones told the SMH. “No one could quite understand why, but Wally Lewis wasn’t a great role model for the rest of the team.
